Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 4, 2026

This policy explains what information Sumiyomi (“we”, “us”) collects when you use sumiyomi.com, why we collect it, and the choices you have. If you have any question about it, email [email protected].

The short version

  • You can read everything without an account.
  • Your bookmarks, reading history and settings are saved in your own browser. We never receive them.
  • We don’t use advertising, analytics or social media trackers, and we don’t sell personal data.
  • We only handle personal data when you choose to share it, for example by posting a comment or emailing us, plus the technical data every website needs to run safely.

Information saved in your browser

To make reading comfortable without an account, Sumiyomi saves the following in your browser’s local storage, on your device only:

  • your reading history and the chapters you’ve read;
  • your bookmarks;
  • your reader settings and your light or dark theme choice;
  • the reactions and comment likes you’ve given, so the same vote isn’t counted twice;
  • how you like comments sorted.

During a visit, your browser also keeps a temporary note (session storage) so that opening the same chapter again counts as one view. None of this is sent to us. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.

Comments

When you post a comment, we collect the name, email address and text you enter. Your name and comment are shown publicly; your email address is never shown. WordPress, the software Sumiyomi runs on, also records your IP address and your browser’s user agent to help detect spam. A first comment may wait for approval before it appears.

Comment avatars are made from the first letter of your name. We don’t use Gravatar or any other avatar service, so your email address isn’t shared with anyone.

If you tick Remember me, your browser keeps your name and email address in cookies for one year, so you don’t have to type them again.

Reactions, likes and view counts

Reactions on chapters, likes on comments and view counts are anonymous totals: we don’t store who reacted, liked or read what. To prevent abuse, we keep a scrambled, one-way version (a hash) of your IP address for about a minute while counting votes. It is then deleted automatically.

Search

When you search, your query is sent to our server to find matching series. We don’t keep a search history. Like any web request, it can appear in our server logs (see below).

Cookies

We don’t use advertising or analytics cookies. The cookies Sumiyomi may set are functional:

  • Comment cookies, only if you tick “Remember me” (kept for one year);
  • Login cookies for our staff when they sign in;
  • Cache cookies that tell our caching system to show signed-in staff and commenters an up-to-date page;
  • Security cookies that Cloudflare may set to tell people and bots apart (for example __cf_bm, which expires after 30 minutes).

Server logs and security

Every visit passes through Cloudflare and reaches our web server. Like most websites, these systems record technical information about each request: IP address, date and time, the page requested, the referring page and the browser’s user agent. We use it only to keep the site secure and working, for example to stop attacks and fix errors, and keep it only as long as needed for that.

Who we share data with

We don’t sell, rent or trade personal data. We rely on a few service providers to run the site:

  • Cloudflare, Inc. provides our content delivery network, DNS and security protection, and processes the request data described above. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
  • Our hosting provider runs the server that stores the site, including comments.
  • Our email provider handles the messages you send us.

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Sumiyomi, our readers or others.

Fonts, share buttons and other sites

Our fonts are served from our own server, so loading a page doesn’t contact Google Fonts or similar services. We don’t embed third-party videos, social media widgets or ads. The share buttons are plain links: nothing is sent to those networks unless you click one, and then their own privacy policies apply.

How long we keep information

  • Comments, with the name, email address, IP address and user agent attached to them, are kept until the comment is deleted. You can ask us to delete your comments at any time.
  • The hashed IP addresses used to limit votes are deleted after about a minute.
  • Emails you send us are kept as long as needed to deal with your request.
  • Server logs are kept for a limited time, for security and troubleshooting.

Legal basis (EEA and UK)

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process personal data on these grounds: our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website and fighting spam (server logs, comments, vote limits); your consent where you give it (the “Remember me” cookies, which you can withdraw by deleting them); and legal obligations where they apply.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to correct or delete it, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to receive a copy of it. To make a request, email [email protected] with the subject “Privacy request” and the email address you used for comments. We may need to confirm that the request comes from you. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

California residents: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in the California Consumer Privacy Act.

International transfers

Cloudflare operates a global network, so your request data may be processed in countries other than your own. Where data protection law requires it, these transfers are covered by safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

Children

Sumiyomi is not directed at children under 13, and some series contain mature themes. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children under 13, or under 16 where local law sets a higher age. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We’ll update this page when our practices change and change the “Last updated” date at the top. If we ever add analytics or advertising, we’ll update this policy before we do.
